Community Links – Dundee West End

The West End of Dundee

has a strong community spirit – there is a cohesive identity and many of the residents feel that they can contribute to the improvement of the amenities and conditions of the area – it is good to feel that you have a voice.

It is important however to note that I am not painting an overly rosy picture. There can be areas or issues on which people can have differing views and different people can have opposing priorities and perceptions of what is and is not important. Examples can be issues such as car parking (or lack of it ), late night noise ; litter ; dogfouling ; grafitti ; provision of schools ; library opening hours .

The West End of Dundee has a wide mix of residents and businesses – due to the close proximity of the University of Dundee (and the steady increase in students) there is a significant amount of students in the area – there has been an increase in the amount of properties that are classed as HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupation) .

The following clubs , organisations and groups are what I would term Community based – I believe that they all have good intention for the residents of the West End of Dundee and that the links may be of use to you.

Please note – this a fledgling list so feel free to drop me a message if you have any suggestions for additions –

Dundee West Fest Project

DUNDEE WESTFEST is a community led initiative in the West End of Dundee which aims to celebrate the area’s diverse culture and vibrant community spirit. A week-long Festival will centre around five themes: art, drama, environment, history and music, culminating with a parade and party. The festival is open to all who want to take part whether that is a small community group, individual artists / performers, local residents and large organisations who are active in art, drama, environment, history and music. The objective is to harness the skills and enthusiasm of people in the West End to create a memorable and enjoyable festival which will generate benefits for the residents of the west end, visitors to the city and local businesses. The first festival will take place 20 -27 June 2010 and be an annual event thereafter.
